Great Egret In Mating Plumage - Acrylic Giclee Painting

Barbara Fallenbaum

Barbara Fallenbaum's painting of a Great Egret all dressed up for mating season.

A patch of skin on its face turns neon green, and long plumes grow from its back.  Those plumes nearly brought the great egret to extinction during the late 1800 when they were hunted for these aigrettes (long plumes).   Saw this one while boating through the Narrows in Pinellas County.  Such a beautiful creature, so majestic and stately.
